Warm Up to Contemporary Art This Week in Miami

Art Basel @ Miami Beach

WARM UP TO CONTEMPORARY ART THIS WEEK IN MIAMI
If you're on the cutting edge of the contemporary art scene, you're probably already strolling the Art Deco-lined streets of Miami. The city is transformed into an art-lover's paradise this week for Art Basel Miami Beach. Now in its sixth season, this American sister of the world's most respected art show in Switzerland, brings more than 200 galleries to Miami where visitors experience the best in art, architecture, music, film, and design. Not sure what to see first? We've picked highlights for each day of the festival and a few other Miami hotspots to keep you satiated.

WHAT NOT TO MISS

Wednesday, Dec. 5, 6 to 10 p.m.: The art culture gathers on the sand for the opening night of "Art Positions," where 20 young galleries show their programs amid live DJs and open-air cinema at Collins Park Beach between 21st and 22nd streets.

Thursday, Dec. 6, 9 p.m. to midnight: Celebrate contemporary Russian culture at The Raleigh for the official Hugo Boss and RIGroup party to celebrate "Russia Miami 2007." The exhibition is on display daily at the Collins Building, 39 NE 39th St. in the Miami Design District.

    Friday, Dec. 7, 8:30 to 10 p.m.:
Join the conversation as Jacques Herzog and artist Doug Aitken discuss their work at an evening honoring Herzog & de Meuron Architects at The Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road. Free tickets are available. Call (305) 674-1292.

Saturday, Dec. 8, 1 to 3 p.m.: Ready for a shopping break? Rap-mogul Russell Simmons and philanthropist Allison Weiss Brady will co-host a fundraiser for Simmons' Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation at Intermix (634 Collins Ave.) where a percentage of purchases will help promote art education for at-risk children. Call (305) 534-0008 to RSVP.

Saturday, Dec. 8, 8 to 11 p.m.: Art and music are brought together when Lou Reed is honored, and Julian Schnabel presents Berlin, his new film about the musician, at The Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road. Free tickets are available, but there is limited seating. Call (305) 674-1292 to RSVP.

WHERE TO STAY:

A fixture on Ocean Drive since 1936, The Tides (1220 Ocean Dr., www.tidessouthbeach.com) is a newly remodeled classic featuring original Art-Deco interiors updated by Kelly Wearstler. Once featuring 115 rooms, the hotel now offers 45 spacious suites, each complete with its own personal assistant briefed in the guest's preferences and on call 24 hours a day. There are still a few rooms left at The Tides from December 6 to 8 if you're currently considering the beach as an option.

WHERE TO EAT:

With a look befitting it's Design District digs, Grass Restaurant and Lounge (28 NE 40th St., www.grasslounge.com) is the perfect place to harness your chi and enjoy the Asian- and American-inspired fare.

Casa Tua's intimate, exclusive atmosphere is reminiscent of an Italian villa (1700 James Ave., www.casatualifestyle.com). Have a seat in the dining room or at the communal "chef's table" for a more homestyle experience.

AFTER HOURS:

Lounge in the luxe Redroom, out by the pool, or at tables behind billowing white sheers at SKYBAR (1901 Collins Ave., www.shoreclub.com/shore_club_skybar.asp), consistently one of the hottest nightclubs in Miami.
