CITY PRESENTS THE GATHERING ON GREENEDesign Week is upon us! Come celebrate this Sunday, May 20th, at Gathering on Greene —the premier design event for the premier design week. Greene Street in NYC's SoHo will be closed from Houston to Prince streets and lined with InterfaceFLOR carpet tiles, forming an "indoor-outdoor" runway for design. Greene Street retailers including B&B Italia, Paul Smith, MOSS, Hugo Boss, Kelly & Ping, Pomegranate Gallery, Cite, Andrianna Shamaris, and Babette will keep their doors open for special events and celebrations throughout the evening. Celebrity DJ Beverly Bond will provide music. Sponsors include aloft (a vision of W Hotels); Franciscan Vineyards, Christiania Vodka, and Interface FLOR. Even Mayor Mike Bloomberg is on board: "We are especially excited for CITY Magazine and NY3D’s Gathering on Greene, where SoHo's finest design stores will raise money for New York Education + Design, a unique initiative pairing the Big Apple's top architects with students from Urban Assembly's High School of Design and Construction, who will ensure that New York remains one of the world’s best-designed cities for years to come." 5–9 p.m. Go to www.city-magazine.com/gathering and www.nyiiid.com |

As Creative Director of Qantas, Australian native Marc Newson was given two high-profile projects: design and outfit Qantas' mammoth Airbus A380 fleet; and redesign the Sydney and Melbourne first class lounges. While the former will have to wait until Airbus delivers next year, the latter open May 23. Proclaiming them "the best in the world," Qantas' First Class lounges are the ultimate in pre-flight preparation for the jet-set crowd, boasting a fully stocked library of magazines, books, and newspapers, individual marble showers, banks of flat-screens with PlayStation3 consoles, and Poltrona Frau couches. Business travelers will rejoice over the computer terminals, free WiFi, and power points hiding under every chair. Or leave the work at the office and take a cue from CITY travel blogger Greg Lindsay: arrive 8 hours early for your flight and soak up the pleasures of the full service Payot Paris day spa. Just don't forget you've got a flight to catch. Go to www.qantas.com |
